So the London Review of Books’ Jenny Diski went to South Africa, expecting to find the rainbow nation of mythical proportions, and instead was shocked at the extent of persisting racist attitudes. Curiously, she did not speak to a lot of black people. She mostly sticks to quotes from her racist white acquiantances. Her story, although entirely correct about the continued racist attitudes, does not really say anything surprising to anyone who has set foot on South African soil in the past 14 years. Racism runs deep. Inequality is appalling. Tourism is still booming.
